Network of Excellence "Wirtschaftlicher Wandel, Lebensqualität und das soziale Band" (EQUALSOC)
Forschungsfrage/Ziel:
Im Rahmen dieses über fünf Jahre von der Europäischen Kommission finanzierten Exzellenznetzes kooperierte das MZES mit 13 führenden sozialwissenschaftlichen Forschungsinstituten in Europa mit dem Ziel, in interdisziplinärer Zusammenarbeit von Wissenschaftlern aus der Ökonomie, Sozialpolitik, Soziologie und Politikwissenschaft herausragende europäische Forschungskompetenz für die Untersuchung der Folgen von wirtschaftlichem Wandel für die Lebensqualität und den sozialen Zusammenhalt in den Gesellschaften Europas aufzubauen. Auf der Grundlage vielfältiger internationaler Datenbasen wurde – in der Regel Länder vergleichend – untersucht, wie Lebensqualität und sozialer Zusammenhalt beeinflusst werden durch Bildung und soziale Mobilität, Entwicklungen im Arbeitsmarkt, bei der Einkommensverteilung und -mobilität, in Familien und sozialen Netzwerken, bei der kulturellen und sozialen Differenzierung, sowie im sozialen Vertrauen und der sozialen und politischen Legitimität. Dem Charakter des Netzwerkes entsprechend vollzog sich die Arbeit in zahlreichen international zusammengesetzten Forschergruppen und Forscherteams, bei deren Initiierung und Leitung Mitarbeiter und Mitarbeiterinnen des MZES eine sehr aktive Rolle spielten.
Unter anderem leiteten Walter Müller und Steffen Schindler (beide MZES) die Arbeitsgruppe “Bildung, soziale Mobilität und gesellschaftlicher Zusammenhalt“. Aus ihr sind bislang fünf Sonderhefte von Fachzeitschriften, ein Herausgeberband und über 100 Aufsätze in weiteren Fachzeitschriften hervorgegangen. Besondere Schwerpunkte lagen in der Entwicklung und Evaluation besserer Instrumente zur international vergleichbaren Messung von Bildungsabschlüssen in von Irena Kogan (MZES) und Silke Schneider (Nuffield College Oxford) geleiteten Teams. Marita Jacob (MZES) und David Reimer (MZES) leiteten Studien zur Rolle von Hochschulbildung für sozialen Ungleichheit. In mehreren weiteren Teams entstanden verschiedene Beiträge von MZES-Mitarbeitern und Mitarbeiterinnen zur Erklärung ungleicher Bildungschancen in der einheimischen Bevölkerung und in verschiedenen Zuwandererpopulationen.
Irena Kogan (MZES) war verantwortlich für ein Team zur Untersuchung der Partnerwahl von Immigranten in verschiedenen Ländern Europas. Die Ergebnisse sind in einem Sonderheft der Zeitschrift für Familienforschung erschienen. Jan van Deth und Sonja Zmerly (beide MZES) leiteten ein Team zu „Civicness, Equality, and Democracy: A ‘Dark Side’ of Social Capital?“. Aus seiner Arbeit entstand ein Sonderheft des American Behavioral Scientist. Claus Wendt (MZES) leitete zusammen mit Joakim Palme (SOFI, Stockholm) ein Team zur Untersuchung von Institutionen und Leistungen der europäischen Wohlfahrtsstaaten und wie diese von den Bevölkerungen in den einzelnen Ländern wahrgenommen und bewertet werden. Claus Wendt war außerdem verantwortlich für ein Team zur Analyse des institutionellen Wandels in europäischen Wohlfahrtsstaaten. Ergebnisse der beiden Teams wurden in internationalen Zeitschriften publiziert. Bernhard Ebbinghaus (MZES) leitete zusammen mit Alex Bryson (LSE) und Jelle Visser (AJAS, Amsterdam) ein weiteres Team, das die Gründe für den Niedergang der Gewerkschaftsmitgliedschaft in Europa und deren Folgen für den gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhang untersuchte. Die Ergebnisse zweier Tagungen werden als Sonderheft im European Journal of Industrial Relations im Sommer 2011 erscheinen.
Neben seinen wissenschaftlichen Erträgen war das Netzwerk von besonderer Bedeutung für die Integration des wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchses des MZES in die internationale wissenschaftliche Community. Viele Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter konnten in den vom Netzwerk veranstalteten Sommerschulen, Methodenworkshops und Konferenzen ihre Beiträge vor ausgewiesenen internationalen Wissenschaftlern zur Diskussion stellen, Kontakte knüpfen und Erfahrungen in der europäischen Forschungskooperation mit Kollegen und Kolleginnen ihrer eigenen Generation machen.
