Income Inequality, Income Mobility, and Social Stratification

Research question/goal:
The project intends to assess the relationship between social stratification and observed socio-economic inequality at any point in time. As the linkage between inequality and stratification depends on the empirical level of income mobility over the life course, the project intends to use available longitudinal data to assess life course income mobility for three Western countries representing three ideal-type welfare systems of the Esping-Andersen typology. With these data, the project seeks to establish the extent and the persistence of cross-national differences in income inequality over the life cycle, thus contributing to a deeper understanding of how different welfare regimes achieve their egalitarian goals.
